Dumsum Village

Dumsum is the name of a small village in Mashabrum Tehsil, Ganchhe District, Gilgit-Baltistan. It is located at a distance of about 150 km from Skardu city and about 50 km from Khaplu. We have heard from our ancestors that Dumsum is a combination of two words. "Dum" means drain and "Sum" means three. That is, the land of three canals. Some people believe that because it is surrounded by three large mountains, it is named Dumsum. There are two separate routes from here, one to Kunduz and the other to Siltro, both of which are counted in the last village of Baltistan.

It is said that three couples came from Gulshan Kabir (a village near Dumsum) and settled here. Thus Dumsum settled later. Therefore, most of the surrounding areas are occupied by other villagers.

Islam spread even after the arrival of Hazrat Amir Kabir Syed Ali Hamdani. There is also a mosque founded by Amir Kabir Syed Ali Hamdani.

Dumsum is also quite famous for its beauty throughout the Ganchhe. Its long, lush green lands and large gardens attract people, which is why so many people come here in the summer for sightseeing.

Like other villages in Baltistan, the source of livelihood is agriculture. Wheat, barley, lentils, vegetables and broth are grown in Dumsum. Fruits include many varieties of apricots, apples, pears, walnuts and cherries. The only way to irrigate lands is to get water from rivers. For which various channels have been set up at government and public level.

People keep a large number of pets. These include cows, sheep, goats, chickens and pigeons.

Dumsum has long been the only village in Meshabrum to have a power plant. From here, not only Mashabrum but also other areas of Ganchhe have been the only source of electricity transmission. At present there are two power plants in Dumsum from which hydropower is generated.

Most people here are educated. For which the Pakistan Army has played a key role. Anwari Shaheed High School Dumsum is Shaheed Brigadier Anwari's boon not only for this village but also for the region from where people are adorned with ornaments like education and are serving in various institutions of Pakistan. Once upon a time, people from all over Baltistan used to come here for admission.

There has been little progress in the health sector. However, there is a dispensary here but there is no one to dispense medicine. The building is there but there is no doctor. Even today, people turn to remote areas and cities for basic health care.

Dumsum village consists of an estimated 230 families. The people here are very kind and hospitable.
